Sleeping Behavior of Children – An Overview

In general terms, children of this age range will need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep. Younger children may require short naps during daytime as well and only a few children at kindergarten age will still need to sleep during daytime.
When your child finds it hard to sleep earlier than 9:00 pm, it does not necessarily mean that you are facing a baby sleep problem. The ideal time to sleep at night may significantly vary. There are children who go to sleep as early as 6:30 pm, while some prefer to go bed at a much later time. The same situation is also observed in the normal waking time of children. In general, children who stay up late usually wake up late, too.
Children under 3 years old may find difficulty sleeping alone. There may be cases where your child may get seriously distressed when separated from you, particularly at night. At this age, your child may still require your presence as they will look for your comfort if they wake up at night.
Putting your Child to Sleep
A basic principle about your child’s sleeping behavior which you must always remember is his need for your presence to feel secure. The inner confidence and sense of independence may not yet be present or strong enough at an early age but this will gradually increase once he reaches 4 years old. You may encounter child sleep problem if you fail to take this into consideration.
There are many reasons why children refuse to go to sleep. They may resist any sort of encouragement as they may not want to miss out on things that they particularly enjoy doing. There are also instances where your child refuses to go to bed since they dread the prospect of being separated from you.
